As dealers specialising in French antiques, we have had the sheer pleasure of acquiring and selling some of the most exquisite pieces from French history. French antiques have become some of the most sought after pieces of period furniture and decorative items in the world.

It’s possibly true to say, a popular conception of French antiques or antique French furniture is an overly decorative design largely based on old French furniture from the 17th and 18th century periods during the reigns of Louis XIV to Louis XVI.
Much of the French antique furniture we see on our travels through France does have all the hallmarks of these periods – ie carved decorative features, bronze embellishments and the like, all adding to create that opulent, sometimes over the top look, so associated with French furniture of these early periods.
In recent decades, the traditional piece of, what has now become known as, ‘brown antique furniture’, has suffered in popularity. Its dark imposing look and lack of character and aesthetic has not helped with its appeal when furnishing homes today. French antiques in some way have come to the rescue bridging the gap between period and contemporary furniture. Their ability to blend and harmonize with modern decor means a well-placed French antique or other pieces of old antique furniture can instantly add a touch of sophistication and warmth to a room.
The broad selection of brown furniture we see during our buying trips at antique markets and fairs in France, provides an endless source of inspiration amongst the French antiques on display. For me personally, many of these pieces have a certain aura that tells a story, offering a glimpse into the past and its history. This is the real joy of dealing in French antiques, constantly learning about the history and culture of France with its ever changing fashions and trends.
