France is still very much an antique dealer’s dream with hidden treasures to be found in most corners of its vast countryside.
I found this pair of demi lune console tables tucked away in the back of a rusty old transit van just as they were being unloaded. Many is the time at French antique markets and fairs that the item sellers place the least value on is the very object we as dealers seek. It’s been my experience that these finds occur more so towards the end of an antiques event rather than at the beginning during the gold rush style race through the gates. One of my best finds of all time was at the end of an antiques fair in the South of France. After pacing the fair for hours in hot July sun and with some fairly good purchases under my belt, it seemed time to call it a day. On my last circuit of the grounds, I happened to spot an oval object covered with a blanket tucked away alongside a large trailer. Drawn by curiosity, I headed over and partially removed the blanket to reveal a marble top table with a unique design. Somehow, this piece had been overlooked by the countless number of dealers that must have passed by the stand that morning. This curiosity, intrigue and a large slice of passion is what fuels all my antique buying trips.
