BELGIAN ATOMIUM

The Atomium full view

The Atomium is a striking monument on the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium. We pass regularly through Brussels on scouting and buying trips through Europe. Belgium’s location with borders to France, The Netherlands and Germany make it a perfect source of French antiques and Swedish and Scandinavian antique furniture via Holland and Denmark. The sheer scale of the Atomium make it visible from many parts of Brussels.

The Atomium was originally constructed for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (Expo 58) and designed to resemble a molecule from iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. This impressive structure comprises nine stainless steel clad spheres connected by tubes. Each sphere can be reached by escalators and elevators contained within the tubes allowing visitors to move between the spheres.

The Atomium has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Brussels featuring ever changing art and science exhibitions within its spheres. The highest sphere offers a wonderful panoramic view of Brussels and its surroundings. It seems over the decades, the memory of the 1958 World’s Fair and its star the Atomium has faded, nevertheless this star of Expo 58 remains a firm favourite with tourists and leaves a lasting impression.

Its exact location is in the Heysel Plateau area of Brussels, near the iconic Mini-Europe park and the King Baudouin Stadium and is easily accessible by public transportation.
