The Dutch linen press was a staple of 17th and 18th-century Dutch interiors. Originating from the Netherlands, these ornate cabinets served as general storage around the home but more commonly, and purposely became a storage cupboard for linens, hence the name. Historical Context

This period was characterised by economic prosperity and cultural artistic achievements in art and design. and the flourishing of trade. As the middle class in the Netherlands expanded, so did the demand for beautiful, functional furniture. Due to their ornate design, they became central pieces in the homes of well-to-do families by way of a status symbol. The lesser, more functional pieces, could be found in bedrooms and hallways adding interest otherwise plain areas of the home.
